Recession: What does it mean for Japan’s recruiting industry and CDS? - Simon Childs, Managing Director, CDS
As Japan Inc. struggles to cope with the ongoing global recession, many foreign capital companies and local companies have implemented hiring freezes on all but essential roles and in an increasing number of cases companies are making some staff redundant.
At a recent event held by the British Chamber of Commerce a panel of speakers from leading recruiting companies, including CDS, participated in a lively debate on how companies can better cope in these difficult times. The consensus was that company’s hiring has slowed right down and there are no clear signs of when this downturn will change. Some projections have hiring looking better in early 2010, but this appears quite optimistic
Changing jobs now is especially challenging. Even when there are opportunities out there, many capable managers are choosing to focus on stability and security in their current firm unless they receive the perfect offer. In this tough market, securing a significant pay rise is unlikely, so those people who choose to leave their existing company, are looking even more closely at the financial stability, management vision and market potential of prospective employers.
Although there are far fewer quality job openings in the current market than in recent years, there are companies that are still actively recruiting key positions during this downturn. Many are doing so because these roles are of major importance to their organizations long term success, and represent a strategic investment to capitalize and gain market share when the economy rebounds. They continue to invest in their human resources, and we at CDS, are focusing on identifying and partnering with these dynamic and forward thinking companies.
CDS has offices in Tokyo and Osaka and we are part of Recruit Agent, Japan's largest recruiting group, giving us a unique advantage with enhanced access to ‘gaishi’ across all business sectors. Our focus is very much on assisting bilingual managers the leaders of today and tomorrow.
To better serve senior level candidates, we have recently separated our retained search practice under a new brand CDS Executive (www.cds-executive.com) and have joined a global partnership AIMS
2010 marks a critical turning point for many in the executive search and recruiting industry as our business is closely aligned with the hiring needs of our clients. We have already seen several boutique recruiting companies in technology and finance exit the Japan market and other global recruiters downsize their local operations. At CDS, we are very confident, given our multi-practice business, partnership with Recruit and our global alliances that not only will we weather this storm, but that we will come out of it stronger.
